An Aymara welcome

Having lost serious money, the journalists got their revenge during a colorful event in the little village of Batallas, about thirty miles northwest of La Paz. It was a place I had visited many times during my years with USAID. Just outside of town, a crowd of Aymara Indians blocked the road, forcing our caravan of cars to stop. The villagers walked down the line, peering into each car. When I stepped out to greet them, they hoisted me onto their shoulders and paraded me down the main street with piercing cries of, “Ayaya Vaughn!” (“Long live Vaughn!”). They showered me with confetti and draped paper garlands around my neck. Then this joyful group applied the coup de grace: multi-colored, knit earmuffs. None of the journalists missed the opportunity to snap my picture. The photos wound up in several publications, including Newsweek that November.
